Material Flow Analysis of End-of-Life Vehicles in South Korea

The increase in end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) has highlighted the need for more advanced ELV dismantling and recycling processes. To understand flow of ELVs after disposal, this study conducted a material analysis by dividing process into stages discarding, collection, treatment, resource recovery, sales/export. According to our analysis, rate South Korea was 88.7%. Losses liquid waste, airbags, waste refrigerants occurred due their destruction or releasement atmosphere during process, losses heat energy produced formal sectors at final stage recycling. Valuable scrap metal, reusable parts, ferrous nonferrous metals were relatively well-recycled, pointing promote less valuable materials, such as plastic, glass, rubber, sheet foam. Metals recovered through shredding automotive shredder residue (ASR) are sold steel mills refineries, ASR is supplied nearby industrial facilities.
